Innate Immunity

Diupload pada 3 Februari 2025

The human body has the capability to mount a resistance and possibly eliminate foreign pathogens or materials that threaten homeostasis. This capability is governed by the immune system. The immune system consists of a complex interplay between organs, cells, cellular mediators and messenger proteins working in concert to keep the body “in check”. They are the body’s very own defence system which can self-recognize pathological components and then mount a response to either eliminate or neutralize it. The immune system offers protection through the action of two separate but complementary responses which are the innate and adaptive (acquired) immunity. Through this lesson, we will first explore the basic understanding of the immune system, its effectors and finally the innate immune system itself. It is important to understand the basic physiology behind these components before we delve further into adaptive or acquired immunity.
